The Route

Having arrived at newcastle universities prisoner cell block h, complete with painfully high heating, no lock toilet and a pretty student aroma.

We tried to settle in our cells.

Having said that the beauty of the campus shone through.

The free wash kit and bag caused a lot of excitement, and was a welcome surprise!

We carbed up at Frankie and bennies ( oh the torture )

then

Wrapped in compression socks and elevation I put my sore legs and chest to bed and attempted sleep.

IMG_1923.JPG

So by six am.

Strapped up, sun cream on, pain relief ready, we set of all geared up for breakfast with the elite.

I’m Not sure the elite were ready for a tutu wearing orange umpa lumpa, but it seem to amuse and a lot of smiles brighten such a scary early morning !

Breakfast was surprisingly good, selection if pretty much anything you wanted and ace coffee.

Sat watching the elite discussing aims and times, the nerves bubbled.

Aiming for completion !

Told the Diver guy takes three days so I have till Tuesday to finish !

Epic!

Having decided not to call any of these challenges a run or a race, due to the shear terror images either word induces into my head.

I am a completer not a competitor !

So we call this ‘little’ walk

And any future ones,

Forever,

Now known as….

The route.

IMG_1928.JPG

The banana chink!

Was how we left the digs to find the start.

After a very long que for the toilets we joined another long que for the start.
1k to walk up to join the masses.

Then another to walk to the start line

IMG_1931.JPG

We spent our queuing time inside the pen, with the smell of our peoples, not sweat but a mix of deep heat, tiger balm and a hint of ibuleve gel.

Spotting the costumes and amazing guys carrying everything including the kitchen sink or a fridge all in aid of charity, made the time pass.

After an hour and a half of waiting we set off….

Torture I needed a wee

Less than a minute in and I’m waiting by a toilet stop 😦

Poor Aisha ready to rock and watching crowds pass by

I was so annoyed at myself.

Finally off again

Two mins run two mins walk

By mile one my lungs were killing Nellie wasn’t sitting she was jumping about having a laugh…

By mile two I honestly thought I was going to die, every single cough and step was like torture.

I assume this is a wall

Couldn’t run so walked at the best pace I could, how do I hit a wall when I’m barely at any pace.

Every turn and extra incline was okay, it hurt, it creaked but I could walk and breath, still faster than being on the sofa, so that was ok

At 5k that was race for life I can do that….

IMG_1934-0.JPG

After this we began playing a game of follow our people, we would see one of the fancy dress peoples and as long as they were in sight we were ok!

As it turned out we over took afew and had to pick new ones, the excitement when we caught up with the brave minion we saw in the que on the way into the stalls was ace !

IMG_1936.JPG

At 10k that was Manchester and at that pace I could keep going I still had some legs…

Every person along the route was amazing from the children with bags of pennies to the teenagers on bikes who’d gone to the shop to buy water for the runners.

Can’t say how blown away I was, by all that the great newcastle residents gave in time, effort and kindness.

Hunger kicked in at mile 7, having already passed the gel grave yard, I ate more sport beans, then at around mile nine there was a lady who had baked sausage rolls, and brought bananas for runners, that was the best sausage roll I have ever had.

Between mile seven and eight we were told to watch out for arthritis research uk team supporters, we were disappointed, there was no sign of them, thinking they had packed up and gone home, it was great to see them closer to mile ten, still there 🙂

After mile ten something pinged in clubby and it stang and tingled it’s way in to the end.

Those last five yards were from road to grass and as we trotted in I felt my toenails catch and well the result was toenail bed blisters …..

But we got a medal

And it was still Sunday

Very happy to have made to the end.

🙂

IMG_1938.JPG

Post route, first day eeks!

So I woke up at six, no clubby and the howlers hollering at the early hours !

Must of been tired !

Thinking I shouldn’t move I stayed still listening for any snap, crackle or pop, I curled and stretched like a cat and was pleasantly surprised I didn’t creak any more than after the 10k I did with plenty of training 🙂

There was a gentle pressure in my toes and tweek in my right foot, not a shock.

Turning and putting my feet down resulted in a bit of a surprise !

IMG_1945-0.JPG

A bruise that doesn’t hurt and in a place that hasn’t bothered me, well the bottom of the foot had so it must of leaked upwards 😉

With an added bonus

Both big toes had blisters under the nail, not too bad.

I could walk, talk and breath….

A bonus 😉

I strapped the foot and compressed the calves (quicker recovery I have found and less swelling)

By lunch time the the pressure was building..

I had to say the lactic acid build up was too, so a stretch and rub down was needed.

After the second school run. The blisters were peeking out of the topof my nail.

Oooo attractive!

By tea time….

I Had to relieve the pressure of the blisters under my toe nails, atleast I know where some of the mountains of water went that I drank other than sweat 😉

Looks like I’ll have one and a half less toenails :/

Clubby has effectively covered the bruising and looks chubbier than ever.

Personally I think I came off lightly so many casualties by the side of the road.

Very grateful I wasn’t one !

🙂

Ode to clubby

I am unsure why you plump out for periods of time and the mass of swollen flesh moves like a jelly on top of my foot, most days during a glare I blank and block you discomforting niggles, I raise my bed to try and reduce the jello but after three full weeks of daily wobbles the gripping and grumbling pain is starting to really frustrate me which makes mental blocking techniques difficult suppose that’s the joys if a vicious circle.
I woke at half three, four and five and have been sitting refusing to get up ever since but not because clubby but because of a bizarro belief I should stay in bed for rest purposes.
Raising my backside and off to start the day running

Starting ground

This year has been deemed a year to face or fight demons !

I have afew!!

I have been asked many times why now….

what’s it for….

Call it the midlife crisis !
20140610-153726-56246419.jpg

But everyone questions where they are heading, reflecting mostly on past failures, our internal voices are often the largest destructive force when setting goals, because we do the job of every bully, abuser or negative person we ever met.

Best example – every new year millions of people make often empty promises to themselves to diet or get fit, start well but tell themselves they can’t or won’t, listen to their negative self talk.

I don’t like empty promises, I am a big believer in goal orientation to combat problems.

When I worked in child care we used smart targets in the planning for children. They are an effective tool for any project.

20140610-160101-57661976.jpg

But all to often goals have been too big, ambiguous and take way too long for any feeling of reward, and I do like a bit of positive reinforcement too.

Odd fact being that most people hear between nine and twenty two negatives for every one positive.

Scary thought but a good case for self advocation.

20140610-153949-56389776.jpg
A bit sexist as I am very sure men too like to reinvent themselves. I wouldn’t say I am reinventing more redirecting my focus.

But how can we do that?

One way is Nlp (neuro linguistic programming) it is often used in business and therapy and is about refocusing the self talk therefore improving productivity.

20140610-155542-57342059.jpg

Another is cbt (cognitive behavioural therapy) basically considering you thoughts, feelings and behaviours how these effect the world around you and yourself.

20140610-203048-73848455.jpg

As time passes ever so quickly, and life has a habit of biting my ass! I find reflection a good tool for moving forward.

Sometimes I take a day or night to just allow my self to refocus.

Blogging helps to do that too…

So I suppose the answer to how is trying lots of methods that work and find what works for u.

It’s a good to add Examination Redirection to the smart target to then make them smarter.

Basically I think it’s important to plan any project and break it down to smaller goals then evaluate and move forward.

So that’s what I have done!

One of the most important things is your network.

In a quest for self development we need to remember testing your self also tests those around, you may discover either your greatest supporter or the negative influences that you need to lose.

So if a person says you’ve changed say thank you because it means they see the progress your making.

And in answer to why now ?

Why not?

I have been considering, reflecting, researching methods and planning on paper what to do and how, spending at least five attempts at the fridge bound spider diagram.

Now

I have a written a monthly plan with time dated goals to achieve bigger goals.

And if I fail at one it’s not failure it’s a chance to evaluate and redirect 😉

Hair yesterday and none today!

So the day finally came….

No backing out!

I washed and groomed my hair to ensure it was in the best condition possible, then separated it into pigtails and plaited it up ready for the final count down 🙂

I put ribbon bows on the top because well why not !
20140601-091504-33304456.jpg

It will be the last time in a while I’ll be dressing my hair 😉

20140601-092019-33619262.jpg

Then set off too the festivities at Stealth black belt academy for the annual queens birthday party, during which we where treated to a fantastic display by the little dragons some even receiving their black belts !

With the most amazing buffet provided by all the families who go to the academy.

Followed by a mini tournament run by the junior black belts and featuring two of my kids.

It was brilliantly run and such a great effort by such a great bunch of role models for the club.

After a long afternoon it was my turn to have my head shaved.

I didn’t need to be stressed as the whole afternoon everyone especially the many stealth mums, had pretty much been on tender hooks on my behalf, I really did feel for them.

Weirdly enough I wasn’t nervous or stressed out just ready for it to happen.

20140601-232828-84508081.jpg

So after a big hug from good friends
It was time to get started!

20140601-230523-83123941.jpg
First up my pigtails were auctioned to five business owners who pledged fifty pounds each to cut them off !

So the fun began!

The sixth pigtail I promised my son could cut off as he needed to feel a little involved !

20140601-230845-83325691.jpg
He seemed to take an awful lot of pleasure in it :/

Words have been had hopefully it’s a one time thing !

Not sure I fancy a phone call to say he massacred some poor girls hair at school !!!

Anyway on to the next part ….

Then it was the turn on the clippers

20140601-231145-83505304.jpg

20140601-231145-83505165.jpg
All was going well but boy did it take along time !

My youngest daughter was getting quite upset and didn’t like this part at all 😦 (hair and appearance is a big thing for a 14yr old too) but she resolved to get through it and I was very proud of her for it.

When it was over I received a lot of support and praise but Craig stepped in and offered to have his own head shaved and that of his best mate if the crowd raised an extra four hundred pounds between them !

20140601-231832-83912127.jpg

20140601-231831-83911991.jpg
Guess what they did too !

20140601-231905-83945765.jpg
A huge thank you goes out to Craig and Paul for being such fabulous good sports and helping to raise that much more!

So proud to be part of the stealth family and so grateful for all their support !

Many thanks to all of those that attended and a huge thank you to everyone who donated !

Owed to a sausage….

One of four challenges for the 39 steps to 40 is to improve my dietary habits!

Being overweight and unfit means, I have been making some bad choices, some I will find easy to live without and others probably not 🙂

So I kick started healthy eating by completing a four day detox !

I used some of these recipes and afew I found on the internet.

20140524-121802-44282403.jpg

My youngest daughter wanted to support me in this first challenge too and because she has a severe nut allergy we avoided the almond contents.

I expected a lot of caffeine withdrawal issues and Abit of hunger but I was not expecting the total craving for meat most predominantly sausages!

20140524-164650-60410513.jpg

So after squashed breakfast and green tea and lemon.

20140524-164800-60480144.jpg

20140524-164801-60481047.jpg

There was plenty of water and more squash fruit and veg !

By day two’s end my daughter needed a real meal and I understood the need to eat normally, so I ate most of the ingredients of the next juice instead of blending it down!

We did the same the next two days and she had proper grub and I stuck to the list of fruit, veg and water !

Sadly the meat cravings were the worst and began dreaming of sausages and bacon.

So to love a sausage that’s not odd right?

I haven’t a clue how to cope with 4 weeks as a vegetarian, one of the 4 food challenges in this year.

Saturday morning came and a grill up of meat was sorted!

It was yum !

But I was mortified at leaving a sausage because after all that craving I couldn’t manage more than one :/

But there’s a BBQ later too.

Sure I’ll work my way through !

Do I feel different ?

Disappointedly not as much as I thought…..
I haven’t used weight as a calculating factor either as I haven’t weighed myself yet !

Am I surprised by the lack if coffee craving ?

Most definately…..
And I will go decaf and more water as that wasn’t hellish. But no coffee forever isn’t likely !

The meat issue ! I think juicing will stay with me for a meal a day maybe too and but protein content needs reviewing. Especially if I use this to help in training.

Big bonus the kids like fruit and veg juices !!!! Whoop whoop!!

So first experiment in diet challenges all done !!! I still love food and sausages it would seem but I cracked it!

You can help me raise money for this great cause by donating directly to my fundraising page – http://www.justgiving.com/Vix-Mcbride.
